GUISBOROUGH’S new citizen of the year is Sandy Mackenzie, chairman of the town’s thriving football club.

The award, from the town council, reflects the major success the club has made with team developments over the past three years, especially with its many youth squads.
Mr Mackenzie was proposed for the honour by former town mayor Anne Franklin, who died suddenly in July.
Current mayor Heather Barker has solidly endorsed Councillor Franklin’s choice, and presented the coveted award to 60-year-old Corus engineer Mr Mackenzie.
Lifelong sports lover Mr Mackenzie, of Wykeham Avenue, Guisborough, has been chairman of Guisborough Town FC since November 2005, when members first instigated their successful plan to encourage youth participation.
Currently around 250 youngsters, aged from nine to 18, comprise nine junior teams. There are also two thriving senior teams and a women’s team.
Mr Mackenzie said: “I am very proud to receive this honour, which reflects on all those at the club who have helped to make this possible - and are involved in exciting ongoing developments. These are designed to further encourage and involve Guisborough and East Cleveland youths in the development of their local football club.”

Mayor Barker said: “Mr Mackenzie was chosen by the late Councillor Franklin as she felt that through sheer hard work and determination, and giving of his spare time freely, he has achieved a great deal.
“Since Sandy took over as chairman, the club has gone from strength to strength, with excellent results in the junior league.
“He has personally encouraged children to become involved, giving them greater sporting opportunities. They have also learned discipline and teamwork.
“His enthusiasm and love of the sport has captured the imagination of our young people, and has turned the fortunes, dreams and aspirations of the club into something positive and of which the town can be justifiably proud.”
